The answer to the following puzzle will be one of the quiz questions on the day of the party. You need to work out how much each man will have earned after 4 years. The two sums will be worth one point each!
The big boss interviewed 48 men for the two jobs he had to fill. At last he found two men he liked, Williamson and Turner.
He called them into his office together. "I'll take you both on," he said; "£400 a year."
Thank you, sir said Williamson.
Turner hesitated. "Forgive me mentioning it, sir, he said, "but what are the prospects of advancement?"
The Big Boss smiled agreeably: "We have a fixed scale of increases here," he said. "Or rather two fixed scales. You can please yourself which you have. Either you can have a rise of £5 every six months or a rise of £20 a year."
Turner didn't hesitate. "I'll take the £20 a year rise, sir," he said eagerly.
Williamson thought for a moment. "I think I'd rather have £5 every six months," he said slowly.
