Brighter Blackout Book
By Howard Thomas
Assisted by Marjorie A. Banks
George Allen & Unwin Ltd
Published 1939

This marvellous book belongs to Mr Steve Crooks, who has an incredible collection of WWII memorabilia which he has very kindly offered to display for us on the day of the party. To give you a flavour of the book we've included here a picture of the cover and the foreword. You can see one of the puzzles included in the book by clicking Puzzle here, and two examples of some of the games by clicking Games here.

Foreword By The Lady Kemsley

You are going to get a lot of enjoyment out of the Brighter Blackout Book. I did. It is one of the most original and amusing books I have ever read, and I am sure you will agree with me that the more fun we get these the better for us all.

But there are hundreds and thousands of men who are not having much fun. They are the soldiers, sailors and airmen. They need entertainment much more than we do. They need woollen comforts, too, and cigarettes. The Daily Sketch War Relief Fund exists to help them. With the money we get we are supplying cigarettes, dart boards, dominoes, draughts, musical instruments, playing cards, boxing gloves and footballs in particular. We are able to buy cigarettes free of duty and other goods at wholesale prices. That is why I am asking for money.

Will you please send me a donation? If you cannot, will you knit for me? Knitting instructions are obtainable free by application, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope to me: The Lady Kemsley, Daily Sketch War Relief Fund, 144 Piccadilly, London W1. There is a donation form at the end of this book.

The men are wanting things so badly. The heads of the fighting services, who know their needs, are our patrons. Now I want you to tell your friends about my Fund, and also about this excellent book. The author and publishers have kindly consented to give a large percentage of the profits on every copy sold to my Fund. If you can help me you have my heartfelt thanks.

Edith Kemsley
